Yesterday at www.jabandgrapple.com we asked “Does Jeff Lacy Still Have It?” and terminal night on ESPN2’s weekday Night Fights we got a resounding answer: not at all. Lacy’s (24-1-0) eld selection conclusion over Epifanio Mendoza (28-6-1) was due in equal parts to Mendoza’s demand of a finishing aptitude and dubious ringside judging.
Mendoza had Lacy hurt in the second (video below), sixth, and eighth and should have finished the employ in at small one of those rounds. In the second Mendoza had Lacy staggering but quickly outpunched himself feat for the strong and couldn’t sustain any meaningful blows.
In the sixth Lacy spat out his mouthpiece to provide himself a breather and in the eighth he forcefully tackled Mendoza into the ropes. The tackle seemed to suck a enthusiastic care of power from the navigator challenger; prior to the filthy veteran move Mendoza was energetic and high but afterwards his power looked drained.
Understandably, the gathering at Morongo Casino Resort & Spa in Cabazon, California showered the pro-Lacy selection with boos and vehement disapprovals.
Jeff Lacy did not merit the get terminal night in the same artefact he didn’t merit to eld selection Vitali Tsypko. Lacy leads a charmed chronicle exclusive the ring. That charm module finish if he steps up to fight Jermain Taylor. No judges module save him during that fight.
The remainder of ESPN2’s entertaining weekday Night Fight card featured three knockouts. The Ring’s #5 lightweight Jose Armando Santa Cruz (26-3-0) blasted Miguel Angel Munguia (16-13-1) with a fifth round body shot that mitt the unsuitably nicknamed fighter (El Flaco) screaming to the canvas in pain.
In the other bouts prospects Danny Jacobs (8-0-0) and Carlos Velasquez (8-0-0) both scored early round knockouts over over-matched opponents. Jacobs’ fight lasted only one round patch Velasquez’ managed to go two.

The September 20 reddened heavyweight title match between Joe Calzaghe (45-0, 32 KOs) and Roy Jones, Jr. (52-4, 38 KOs) has officially been postponed because of a Calzaghe right carpus injury.
ESPN’s Dan Rafael quotes the fight’s promoter as saying “(Calzaghe) told me it’s an scraped right wrist,” the promoter said. “I was told that he hurt it on Sunday punching a heavy bag.”
The initial word is that the match could be rescheduled for November. No word on whether the fight’s proposed venue, New York’s President Square Garden, would be available during that month. The NY Knicks have still to release their schedule. The Rangers have a home fellow with the Boston Bruins on November 15 so that fellow is presumably out.
The Ricky Hatton vs. Paulie Malignaggi is currently on for November 22 so that fellow is also probably out. November 29 would sandwich the bout between Hatton and the proposed Dec 6 Oscar De La Hoya fight. That fellow wouldn’t attain sense.
That leaves the 1st and the 8th. Our guess is the November 8. Make plans accordingly.
