That’s ground I jumped at the chance to impact for b5Media and blog about college hoops. I was already watching a ton of games, so ground not share what I was thinking?
Well, I am effort ready to pursue some other business interests in my life, and these new interests are feat to obligation a bunch of my time. Unfortunately, that means that some of the fun things in my chronicle module need to take a back seat for a while, and one of those is College Fast Break.
I appreciate the opportunity that b5Media gave me to blog about college basketball, and I’ve enjoyed sharing some of my thoughts and feelings about the sport I fuck with the masses.
Thanks to everybody who regularly visits the blog - please move to do so. I undergo the fine folks at b5 module find somebody who module push College Fast Break to higher heights than I was able to do.

Petty Enterprises recently announced that Kyle Petty will take a yield of absence from the no. 45 Dodge beginning on the June 1st race at Dover until July 12th when the Sprint Cup Series heads to Chicago. The reason for Petty’s yield from the team is to attend his daughter’s wedding, and he module then tie the TNT booth to report from broadcasting duty.
The vacuum in the no. 45 car module be filled by NASCAR rookie, Chad McCumbee, at Dover and Chicago, with Terry LaBonte to intend the car for the five races in between. Something was assorted about ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights. I was relaxed. I was soothed. I wasn’t stressed. I didn’t change the channel. I wasn’t outcry “please stop talking” at the television. The mute button was not engaged. What was the difference? The progressively annoying team of Joe Tessitore and Teddy Atlas was replaced terminal night with the always excellent Brian Kenny and ex-heavyweight champ and Transporter 2 actor Shannon Briggs.
I’m not denying Teddy Atlas’ extensive noesis or his boxing acumen. He’s a liked guy who every five minutes forgets more about boxing than I’ll ever know. My important problem is that during his broadcasts he reminds you how much he knows during every second of every match. Sometimes I meet poverty to watch, and take in both the ringside noise and the sounds of the fight. Atlas never allows for personal reflection; the fight always becomes only what he thinks.
Despite Friday Night Fights being Shannon Briggs’ first announcing attempt he sounded relaxed and comfortable. His biggest asset is his very calming pleasantly-toned voice. He’s meet nice to center to. He’s never whiny and never over-the-top. He’s understated but not overwhelmed by the experience, clever without being obnoxious, and jocular with Kenny without excluding to the check audience. Sure, he said a aggregation of banal “wows” “nices” and “definitelys” and his analysis rarely approached the technical smarts of Atlas but I sure hope he gets another color statement chance.
As for Brian Kenny, he’s the best ESPN has to offer. He’s a straight announcer who neither plays for laughs nor takes the sports he covers too seriously. His concern perspective reaches further than sports and Bristol, Conn; he’s not a cake quarrier Syracuse U. broadcast journalist. His on-air presence is always high despite the fact that he (thankfully) never yells or raises his voice. If more ESPN sports announcers brought Kenny’s studied approach, pleasant, curmudgeon-free attitude, and irony-free personality then maybe I’d start watching SportsCenter again.
Oh, and ESPN, would you please start broadcasting the weekday and Friday Night Fights fights in HD? That would be very much appreciated. And please bring back the Kenny-Briggs team. They were great.

I recently updated my b5 profile with the intention of explaining how www.jabandgrapple.com could counterbalance both the scripted fun of pro grappling entertainment and the unexpected life-threating tension of professional boxing. My answer wasn’t that they both take place in rings and refer some sort of combat.
No, my explanation was that they are bookends of the sporting concern with everything else existing in between their emotional bounds. Friday night was evidence of this evocative breadth. WWE’s SmackDown and ESPN’s Friday Night Fights were broadcast simultaneously and my Motorola DVR only allowed me to check one at a time patch taping both. I was forced to withdraw into both without distraction.
First up was the historied costumed cabaret fun of SmackDown. The Undertaker was trying to take revenge out on a supposedly wheelchair-bound lady. People were fired, lives were affected, fear, trouble, mayhem, betrayal and expiration were the pervasive themes.
We all know, however, that the situations were fake. That in the end the performers’ lives aren’t affected as far as career longness and/or actual witting danger. Sure, unexpected tragedies can and have occurred but The Undertaker’s choke slam really isn’t endangering opponents; the Great Khali wasn’t really bleeding profusely from the mouth a few weeks ago. Their career paths are definite by scriptwriters and their salary, however modest, isn’t interdependent on them winning.
Once SmackDown ended I switched over to the very real career arc of Chris Byrd, a 37-year-old who had meet forfeited 37 pounds in an attempt to contend at the reddened heavyweight level. Things didn’t impact out that substantially for the former heavyweight champion as he was beaten badly and knocked out in the ninth round. Byrd then deliriously apologized to his spouse and handsome teen son; he felt he had permit them down.
The episode was real, the pain evident, and the tragedy too much to bear. Here was a Negro who put his chronicle on the distinction in the ring and couldn’t bear the failure that he wrong perceived himself to be.
Shortly after the fight doctors diagnosed Byrd with a separated shoulder and administered painkillers. Then the situation nosedived. His spouse explained to ESPN, “They gave him Valium and morphine and we couldn’t consequence him up,” she continued. “I was so scared. We had to rush him to the hospital.”

So I turned the channel to the end of the Boston Celtics-Cleveland Cavs playoff game. I fuck the NBA but after the Byrd fight it seemed so superficial and so far removed from man’s essential struggle. So scripted and so much closer to pro grappling than what I had meet viewed.
Lives aren’t feat to be affected by the Celtics expiration no matter how angsty Kevin Garnett portrays himself; no matter how aloof and affected Ray Allen appears to be. They’ll pull in their guaranteed million note lessen accept their loss, move performing to David Stern’s script, move on and contend until their bodies can’t move. Just same Bruno Sammartino, meet same Hulk Hogan and meet same Ric Flair.
If Chris Byrd were to go back in the ring he might be killed, the fact that he’s still an elite boxer doesn’t matter. His skills meet aren’t elite enough.

It took awhile - 178 races to be exact - but, Matt Crafton has finally won his first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race by holding off Chad McCumbee in a green-white-checkered shootout Friday night in the North Carolina Education Lottery 200 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
Kyle Busch appeared as though he was headed for another victory, directive 86 of the 136 laps, but he was participating in an accident with Ron Hornaday back on travel 104 that sent both trucks spinning into the Turn 3 wall. Busch suffered significant alteration to the right side of his truck, essentially sound him out of disceptation for the win.
Erik Darnell was directive the race with meet 7 laps to go, spun his tires on a restart and gave up several positions. As this was happening, Johnny Benson passed Darnell for the lead, but was black flagged by NASCAR for actuation the restart and was ordered to attain a pass through penalty in the pits. The series of events handed the advance over to Crafton, with Todd Bodine and Hornaday battling it out for second place meet behind him.
With meet three more trips around the 1.5 mile track mitt to go, Bodine spun Hornaday heading into Turn 1, and NASCAR froze the field under caution for the final time of the evening, sending the race into overtime. From there, Crafton held off Chad McCumbee, who prefabricated a run downbound the backstretch during the final travel in an effort to catch the race leader, but all for naught. Crafton decussate the finish distinction and secured his first official set of NASCAR checkered flags.
Brendan Gaughan finished third, followed by Erik Darnell and Rick sculpturer to rank the top-five. Kyle Busch was able to intend enough out of his car after the earlier accident to hang onto an 8th place finish. Bodine was still able to finish up in 12th, and Hornaday was relegated to a 23rd place finish.
Following the race, Crafton said, “Finally, we can shut them up. Now they can say, ‘When’s the second one coming?’ Track position was everything. I have a really beatific assemble of guys. We’ve been together for two eld now. We’re a small assemble of guys, but we’re feat to intend more races. I can promise you that.”
Despite Bodine’s claims that his tangle with Ron Hornaday was unintentional, an angry Hornaday stated, “There’s no excuse for that. He flat tried to blackball me,” Hornaday said. “You don’t do that on the straightaway. We were pretty beatific friends, but I don’t undergo now.”
Hornaday’s advance in the points standings has now been reduced to a mere 5 points over Rick Crawford, and Todd Bodine now trails by only 38. The intend by Crafton has placed him 4th in points, and the top-five run by Erik Darnell puts him into the top-ten, as he moves up four spots to ninth.

The Alabama State basketball program was stunned New weekday when sophomore guard Deshean Porchea collapsed and died after playing in a pickup game on campus.
Porchea walked off the suite after the game and collapsed. He never regained consciousness. A candlelight rite was held on the Alabama State campus Thursday night to honor Porchea.
This incident is the stylish in a daylong distinction of incidents where young, healthy athletes have collapsed and died after games or workouts. It would not surprise me at all to see that Porchea had an enlarged heart, which led to his death. I’m not saying that is what happened, but some of the similar deaths were after observed to have been caused by an enlarged heart.
I’m not sure if it is feasible or not, but I believe that every college athlete should undergo some sort of testing to watch if they have an enlarged heart before they are allowed to participate in practices or games.
Even if that testing saves only one life, it is substantially worth it.

Yup, you read the title aright … Kyle Busch, first in the Sprint Cup standings, second in the Nationwide Series standings, sixth in the Craftsman Truck Series standings, and succeeder of 8 NASCAR points-paying events in only 27 races run this season … THAT Kyle Busch is now already making plans to put together a test session over in Nihon with Formula One.
This past Friday night at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, Kyle told the media, “We’re working on a test session right now at the end of November or beginning of Dec sometime, feat to Nihon and doing a lowercase exhibition sort of care and see what it’s like. We’ll take the Cup car over there, too, I think. Just category of run around there at at either Twin Ring (Motegi) or something same that and show them what the Cup cars are like, and try to intend in the Formula One car, too.”
When asked if this was an indicator that he has any welfare in competing in the series, Kyle said, “We’ll see how beatific I test, first.”
